Taking a Knee: Kaepernick and Patriotism

By now you have all heard about the controversy surrounding San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, and his decision to take a knee during the national anthem.  When asked why he didn’t stand and salute during the national anthem Kaepernick said the following:

“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color … There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

The backlash Kaepernick got for taking a stand (or a seat) has gotten people questioning his patriotism, saying he should just “play ball,” even BURNING HIS JERSEY!  Why is it so horrible that he is silently protesting? People accusing him of “disrespecting the flag and the military” yet not acknowledging his right to exercise his first amendment right. We don’t have to blindly follow what’s expected of us. We have every right as human beings to question everything and look critically at the world around us.

Since the recording of this show many other athletes have joined Kapernick in taking a knee during the national anthem. Not because they’re sheep, but because they too, are looking critically at America and it’s current state. People so badly want to behave as if ignoring the injustices in America are going to make them go away. They’re wrong. These issues NEED to be addressed. Whether or not you agree with Kaepernick taking a knee, is irrelevant. The purpose is to get a conversation going, and America is doing just that.
